"To Starve an Ember teaches the reader about wildfire and the danger it poses to communities, but the characters, who are neither too flawed nor too heroic, keep the book from becoming just another fire agency handout.
Prentice, the main character, is someone those of us involved in wildfire can understand. He is on a mission to warn his neighbors that wildfires are inevitable, and to teach them how to save themselves. Like many of the people we meet in this business, Prentice’s neighbors would prefer to think that it can’t happen to them.
How often have we heard that one?
The firefighters in the book strike me as an accurate portrayal of those I knew during my fire crew days. Wildland firefighters are dedicated, love the challenge of their work, but they are human and carry around baggage just like you and me. "
